PHFC expands mission outreach in Wilcox County

The Presbyterian Home for Children continued our mission of service and compassion in the rural Black Belt of Alabama by expanding our outreach efforts so we can make an even more meaningful difference in the lives of children and youth in need.

In September, the Home gave out essential back-to-school supplies at F.S. Ervin Elementary in Pine Hill, a community in Wilcox County. Students received notebooks, rulers, folders, pencils, markers, and other essentials to help them start the year with confidence.

In October, staff set up the school’s new Caring Closet, which provides immediate-need items for the school’s 200 children. The Caring Closet offers socks, underwear, undershirts, deodorant, and new school uniforms – items that help meet students’ basic needs and ensure they are comfortable and ready to learn.

The closet also includes a pantry to supply weekend food bags for about 40 of the most at-risk children, ensuring they don’t go hungry when school meals aren’t available. A washer and dryer were also added so staff can wash uniforms and other items, helping students look and feel their best throughout the school year.

When students take their items in the closet, they are given a card from the Home that includes a Bible verse: “We love because he first loved us” 1 John 4:19

F.S. Ervin’s new Principal Jenorice Kennedy, an Ervin alumnus who took over as its leader this school year, thanked the Home in a social media post for our “generous donation and continued partnership in supporting our students and families.”

“These thoughtful contributions go far beyond the classroom – they reflect a true spirit of compassion and community,” she said. “Together, we are helping ensure every student at F. S. Ervin Elementary has the resources to learn, grow, and succeed.”

Looking ahead, the Presbyterian Home for Children plans to expand the Caring Closet program to two additional elementary schools in Wilcox County during the 2025–2026 school year, extending its reach to even more children in need.

Through partnerships, community support, and a deep commitment to mission, the Home continues to live out its calling to serve, uplift, and show Christ’s love to children across Alabama’s Black Belt.
